Sharing event photos: WhatsApp, Google Drive or Matcha?
A WhatsApp group and a Google Drive link are most people's default, but neither was built for event photos. Here is an honest comparison of the three options, Matcha Photo included, and of when WhatsApp and Drive are still perfectly fine.
No app. No passwords. Straight to their phone.

The first problem
Why a WhatsApp group falls apart with event photos
A WhatsApp group is convenient at first, but it was built for conversation, not for an album. Photos get mixed in with congratulations messages, compressed to low quality, and disappear up the scroll within a day or two.
A guest who wants to find their photos has to scroll through hundreds of other people's photos, and their best photo usually stays on someone else's phone. The more guests there are, the bigger the mess.
The second problem
Why a Google Drive link is generic, not personal
Drive solves the quality issue, but it sends every guest to the same giant folder. It doesn't know who appears in each photo, so everyone gets the same sea of files.
Sometimes guests need a Google account or access permissions, every file is called something like IMG_2381, and there is no easy way for a guest to get only the photos they're in. It's an archive, not an experience.
The Matcha way
What Matcha does differently
Matcha was built specifically for event photos. Guests open it in the browser through a QR code or link, take a quick selfie, and get a personal gallery with the photos they appear in, with no app and no password.
- Access through a QR code or link, no app
- A personal gallery for every guest, by face matching
- A shared album with every photo from the event
- A public album and a real-time live screen on the dance floor
- Collecting photos from guests
- The photographer's official photos in the same place
When WhatsApp or Drive are perfectly fine
Not every event needs a system. For a small family gathering, an intimate evening or one group that's already chatting, a WhatsApp group does the job, and a Drive link is enough when you just want to pass along a file or two in full quality.
These tools are free, familiar, and everyone already knows how to use them. If that's what fits your event, great.
When Matcha is the better choice
Once there are many guests, many photos, or a wish for everyone to get exactly their own photos without searching, Matcha makes the difference. Weddings, bar and bat mitzvahs, corporate events and festivals are exactly where it fits.
Instead of a sea of files, every guest gets a personal link to their gallery, alongside a shared album and a public album, and the photographer keeps working as usual.
Frequently asked questions
Questions about sharing event photos
Didn't find your answer? Send us your event type and date, and we'll get back to you with a straight answer.
Can we just open a WhatsApp group for the event photos?
You can, and that's fine for a small, intimate event. But in a big group the photos get mixed up with messages, compressed in quality, and everyone has to scroll for hours to find themselves. Matcha gives every guest a personal gallery with only their photos, with no scrolling and no searching.
What's wrong with sending a Google Drive link to all the guests?
A Drive link sends everyone to the same big folder. It isn't personal, it isn't sorted by guest, and it sometimes requires an account or permissions. A guest who appears in ten photos out of two thousand has to go through all of them. With Matcha, every guest gets a personal link that leads straight to their photos.
Do guests need to download an app to use Matcha?
No. Guests open it in their phone's browser through a QR code or link, take a quick selfie, and get their personal gallery. There is no app to download and there are no passwords.
Does Matcha replace the event photographer?
No. Matcha works alongside the photographer. The photographer uploads the official photos, and Matcha makes sure every guest gets their photos quickly, alongside a shared album and a public album. The production stays professional; only delivery to guests becomes simple.
When are WhatsApp or Drive still enough?
For a very small event, with few photos and one close-knit group, WhatsApp or Drive can be enough. Once there are many guests, many photos, or a wish for everyone to get exactly their own photos without effort, that is exactly what Matcha was built for.
Every guest gets their own photos, without you chasing anyone.
Matcha works alongside your photographer, straight from the phone's browser, with no app and no passwords.
